While Jesse Plemons isn’t exactly the bad guy of the movie Game Night, his character is so eerie that he becomes a villainous figure that looms throughout. Known for his darker roles, Plemons leans into those traits and brings a sinister feeling to the otherwise comedic movie. His character Gary is the butt of many jokes in the film, as the audience learn of his obsession with his ex-wife, to the point where a whole room in his house is a shrine to her. As the movie goes on, the mystery around Gary grows until his intentions are revealed at the end of the picture. The more accurate name for Disney’s upcoming Jungle Cruise movie is probably Scary Death Boat From Hell, but who are we to judge? “Everything that you see wants to kill you,” the Rock’s riverboat captain advises, “and can.” That includes Jesse Plemons’s German prince, who has a big boat, bigger bazookas, and the biggest accent. There’s none of the hammy fun of his Pirates counterpart, played by Geoffrey Rush. The jungle and its creatures have ravaged the conquistadors’ bodies, suspending them between life and death, so Ramirez is rendered unrecognizable by CG excesses that transform him into a mass of writhing snakes. One of his comrades (Dani Rovira) is the spirit of the beehive — in what’s almost certainly not an homage to the classic Victor Erice film. The climactic action — including revelations about Frank’s history — is so convoluted that many audiences will be checking out, especially as the movie careens toward the two-hour mark. That applies both to the unlocking of the Tears of the Moon mystery and to the inevitable battle with Aguirre and Joachim, even if the screenwriters’ bid to infuse a sense of the mythic elevates the story slightly above the generally juvenile level. Partially revived, Aguirre agrees to bring Joachim the arrowhead in exchange for lifting the curse when he finds the flowers.
They request access to a recently acquired arrowhead artifact that Lily believes can locate the Tree but are denied. Lily then steals it, narrowly evading Prince Joachim, who is equally intent on finding the Tree for himself and Germany. But what you may not remember is that when it comes to comedy, he may be Hollywood’s foremost scene-stealer. Plemons’ particular brand of playing-it-straight weirdness is comedic gold. If you want proof, just revisit Game Night, where he’s far and away the best part of a very funny movie.
